You’ll find the four country gentlemen of Chatham County Line gathered around one microphone raising their voices and twanging their instruments and making so much music you’d swear there were 10 of them.

Formed from the ashes of a country-rock group in 1999 among the ashtrays and empty bottles of an infamous Raleigh crash pad, CCL’s new traditional sound is the result of a rare chemistry between its members. Dave Wilson’s precise, authentic songwriting and wistful tenor voice are offset by just the right amount of rock n’ roll edge and attitude. Wilson’s guitar, Chandler Holt’s banjo, John Teer’s fiddle and mandolin, and Greg Reading’s upright bass tread the line between “trad” and “rad” as the group’s repertoire has expanded beyond straight bluegrass to encompass broader facets of Americana. In their natty but well-worn suits and bristling with energy, CCL deliver a defib to ‘grass: after they’re done with it, it has the same heart it always did — only much more alive.
