Alasdair Roberts & Friends
Not performing in 2017
With a bluegrass musician and artist agent father, growing up in a house full of records and musicians and his own forensic interest in northern European folklore prior to studying comparative literature, Roberts was fated to his vocation. Discovered in 1994 in a Perthshire village by his future producer, record label mate and collaborator Will Oldham (with Jason Molina they were the Amalgamated Sons of Rest), his early albums were recorded under the moniker Appendix Out. Roberts has a gift for creating enduring melodies and lyrical twists of ancient folk music; his wordplay has allusions to mythology, esoteric spirituality and Gnosticism, including an album of murder ballads. With skeletal singing, fiddles, drones and unwavering tempos, he discovers traditional music’s inner mysteries.
