The Steep Canyon Rangers
Not performing in 2017
Steep Canyon Rangers evolved from a group of friends playing together for kicks 12 years ago to a bluegrass tour-de-force that has been called ‘the genre’s Rembrandt,’ not to mention the fact that they nabbed a 2013 Grammy and are Steve Martin’s backing band.
Their most recent recording Tell the Ones I Love was recorded in Levon Helm’s famed studio, after impressing them at his Midnight Ramble, and after his untimely death. Veteran producer Larry Campbell helmed the project, creating an organic sound that conjures country barn images, and was struck by the band’s rare combination of respect for form without being constrained by convention. The result reflects the spirit of their live shows: a freewheeling, high-energy approach to bluegrass that rests on a strong foundation of original, inventive songwriting. They nimbly stretch boundaries with blinding speed, instrumental dexterity and tight harmonies. Paint on, boys!
