If you hear the word ‘accordion’ and imagine Latin jazz, tropical nights, and the delicate, heated musical backdrop to a steamy tango, then Renato Borghetti has the food for your musical soul. Borghetti plays the button accordion that is central to the folk music of Brazil, combining the irresistible call to dance with the inimitable Portuguese musical emotion saudade (defined by a friend of mine as ‘a complicated sadness’).

This is the hook of Brazilian music, the mix of rhythm and emotional complication that took the jazz world by storm in the 50s with Brazilian musical heavyweights like Gilberto Gil, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao and Astrud Gilberto and Caetano Veloso. Brazil is most famous for the rhythms of samba, but tango, bossa nova, blues-inflected forro – all of these are the Brazilian musical playground, and Borghetti inhabits the playground with finesse and fire.
