“Eya-Hey Nakoda, a powwow group from the Stoney Reserve of Morley, AB, provided entertainment for the evening with a short dance and drumbeat session in the [National Music Centre]’s main floor. An audible gasp could be heard from guests when the first strike was made onto the drum.”
FYI Music News on Studio Bell’s soft launch April 4, 2016
The name Eya-Hey Nakoda is now on Calgarians’ lips, after their wonderful collaborations on the Making Treaty 7 project with the other musicians and actors. This award-winning, intergenerational Stoney Nakoda powwow group, which ranges in size from 4 to 15 singers and drummers, formed in 1994 by Rod Hunter. Primarily based on Morley’s Stoney Reserve, they have been honoured to have included singers from many different nations: Stoney Nakoda, Cree, Tsuu T’ina, Siksika, Carrier Dakota, Assiniboine and Navajo. Eya-Hey’s magical, traditional drumming, singing and dance will evoke the spirit of the powwow, sans dancing competition and prize money. KC
