Brooklyn songstress Van Etten plays bittersweet spare, subtle neofolk. Growing up in a musical household, she learnt clarinet and piano as a child, performed in school musicals and choir groups and began teaching herself to play guitar and write songs as a teen. That path was temporarily derailed with short studies as sound engineer and managing a multi-use space. Secret open mic performances grew into therapeutic, confessional writing in 2004 and homemade CDs which gained her fans and industry momentum, including singing on The Antlers breakout record, having Bon Iver and The National cover her songs and an EP prior to the release of her much-lauded 2012 album Tramp, produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner. Its songs meld down-to-earth American and English folk and rock music and highlight her emotive, arresting voice.
