“Folk pop-grass” may sound more like a candy than a musical genre, but Toronto’s six-piece Strumbellas rock it, proudly sporting the 2014 Juno Roots and Traditional award on the dashboard of their unheated tour van. They bring a reverence for old country and bluegrass, plus rhythmic, guitar driven melodies, unpretentious songs, soaring vocal harmonies and fun- loving stage demeanor. Playful violin lines mingle with rhythmic guitar and keyboards as true-to- genre minor key balladry creates energetic indie-country.
The music of Edmonton's The Provincial Archive's is forward-thinking rhythmic pop with a nod to folk influences and instrumentation. Equal parts banjos and drum machines with sparkly guitar melodies and layers of ornate hooks and melodies, the band lives in melodic head-swaying territory.
