An understated virtuosity defines Grammy-nominated The Milk Carton Kids and their new album Monterey (to be released May 19). Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale’s songs are stripped down to a deceptive simplicity –two guitars accompanying twin voices that disappear into one. It’s music rooted in intricate guitar picking arrangements, intuitive harmonies and soulful, sometimes heartbreaking and dark lyricism with lots of dry wit and deadpan humour. Theirs is American music at its most expansive, without confines or borders.
