The Calgary Folk Music Festival welcomes 2013 with a bang: the grand opening of Festival Hall on January 26, 2013 in the heart of Inglewood, 1215 10 Ave. SE. From 2:00 - 11:00 pm, we toast this new arts, performance and music space with live music and DJs on three floors.
After having to continually move the Festival's office, we heeded the call to keep the Festival vibe going year-round and provide a quality, accessible venue that enhances Calgary's arts community. Eight years in the making, Festival Hall now acts as the Calgary Folk Music Festival's brand-new home for our staff and 1600 volunteers. It is a state-of-the-art multi-media, 180-seat flexible performance space that will host local, Canadian and international artists from a wide array of artistic disciplines. Designed by award-winning Vancouver-based Peter Cardew Architects, Festival Hall includes geo-thermal passive heating and cooling systems, reclaimed materials and significant, creative architectural details, such as the timbered ceiling.
Festival Hall Unleashed is a free-of-charge, grassroots, community celebration using the annual Calgary Folk Music Festival at Prince's Island Park as our model with our unique collaborative sessions as the festivities' centerpiece. The sessions - curated by local artists Lorrie Matheson, Paul van Kampen, Kenna Burima & Steve Fletcher, Allen Baekeland, and Brent Cooper - will operate consecutively through the day. There, over 35 of Calgary's finest roots, folk, indie and blues artists will share songs and stories. CJSW, CKUA, CJSW and up!97.7 FM DJs will create a chill lounge atmosphere in the upstairs offices. In conjunction with the Festival's 33 1/3 anniversary, they'll spin old school: 33 1/3 records from theirs and the audiences' collections. Food trucks sustain the audience while the artists' music fills their ears.
Festival Hall Unleashed will be a veritable festival-in-a-box for all Calgarians to celebrate the opening of this one-of-a-kind new performance space.
