Young Buck kicks off folk festival, Calgary Herald July 21, 2005

Today ushers in another Calgary Folk Music Festival, the largest entertainment event in the city not called the Stampede. Here's a quick primer to the mainstage performers you'll be seeing on opening night.

5:30-6:05 p.m.: Kawa Brass Band: An Indian brass band from Rajasthan that performs Bollywood film scores, traditional folk music and celebratory wedding music. The act opens up the 26th annual folk festival.

6:15 -7 p.m. Buck 65: A rapper from Halifax who has garnered the interest of everyone from Radiohead to Vincent Gallo, Buck's "hick-hop" is a deadly combination of hip-hop and American folk and country. He was certainly a highlight on his last performance at the Calgaryfolk festival.

7:10-7:50 p.m.Instinkt: This Danish act creates unique instrumental music they've dubbed "Nordic Folkbeat." With strong grooves, they should be able to get more than a few dancing on the grass.

8-8:50 p.m.Hawksley Workman: The Toronto-based Workman is one of Canada's finer rock singer-songwriters, having built up a fanbase with singles such as Striptease and Jealous of your Cigarette. His music has even made the Zach Braff sitcom Scrubs.

9-10 p.m.Jeff Tweedy: Best known as the frontman for Wilco and Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy is an alternative country musician who seems like a natural link between Woodie Guthrie and Radiohead. Here's hoping he plays selections off Wilco's brilliant Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
