Dan Mangan played the CFMF in 2010, but the journey he has taken from his mainstage performance then to his return this year has been… well, even ‘whirlwind’ doesn’t seem to cover it. Following the release of Nice, Nice, Very Nice, Mangan was swept up in international touring, sold-out Canadian shows, and a Polaris Prize shortlist nod. All of this activity has paved the way for possible world domination in the wake of his newest Juno-award winning release Oh Fortune.
The humble acoustic roots of the Vancouver folk musician have been increasingly supplanted by lush orchestration, and Mangan admits to being encouraged to explore around the outer edges of his sonic boundaries by the inspiring free-jazz musicians that make up his band. His gruff vocals lend a beautiful juxtaposition to the swooning string arrangements. Lyrically his songs are painted around the edges with a melancholic brush, but there is a sense that all is not lost, and some comfort can be gained knowing resolution is just around the corner. Dan Mangan, Vancouver folkie is now poised to become Dan Mangan, universally lauded musical juggernaut.
