Dene singer/songwriter Leela Gilday is a captivating, soulful performer who takes listeners on a journey where freedom and joy balance sorrow and injustice. Her lyrics, reflective of her northern roots, embrace Dene life from an urban perspective as exemplified by her anthem, “Calling All Warriors,” which gives voice to missing and murdered Aboriginal women. Whether confessing that she misses her hair dryer at a folk festival, honouring her ancestors at a showcase, or proudly announcing on national radio that she’s learned to tan a moose hide, Gilday’s voice comes straight from the heart. Her quartet includes Winnipeg singer/songwriter and blues artist Jason Burnstick.
