First, a couple of introductions: AroarA is the musical pairing of Apostle of Hustle mastermind and Broken Social Scene co-founder Andrew Whiteman and his wife, singer Ariel Engel. Snowblink pairs singer and guitarist Daniela Gesundheit with her husband, multi-instrumentalist Dan Goldman. And Feist—well, if you haven't already heard Calgary's most beloved expat, she of the silken vocal chords and irresistible melodies, you will soon enough.
When HYDRA first reared its many heads at the 2012 Polaris Prize Gala, it seemed like a beautiful anomaly. Feist, nominated and soon to win the prize for her fourth album, Metals, had invited Snowblink and AroarA (plus Do Make Say Think's Charles Spearin and drummer Lucky Paul) to share the stage and bring the album to life. This meeting of Canada's indie who's-who had makings of a musical one-off, a blink-and-you'd-miss-it treat for the prestigious awards show.
Thankfully, that wasn't the case. What started as a star-studded backing band has evolved to something more fitting of its namesake,a multi-headed musical beast that lives, breathes and sings as one. Engel, Gesundheit and Feist harmonize with supernatural ease as the group flits effortlessly between the catalogues of each of its members. Part folk collective and part art-rock supergroup, this HYDRA is no mere myth—fortunately for us, it's as lovely as its namesake was fearsome.
