Puerto Candelaria combines the irresistible syncopation of cumbia with Colombian folk music, contemporary jazz, Latin and Caribbean rhythms, plus an off-kilter helping of humour and improvisation. Founded in Medellin in 2000, Puerto Candelaria has become a beloved, daring and innovative export from their tiny country, recently electrifying audiences at this year’s Globalfest in New York.
During its 15-year history, the group has recorded four albums and played across as many continents. On their latest album they’ve transformed their underground rhythms into an edgy sound they’ve dubbed rebel Cumbia. Their experimental sounds and electric stage presence, described as “an explosive danceable cocktail where different urban sounds mix a blend of cumbia and atmosphere from the Colombian coast,” add up to an imaginative and magical concoction.
