Lynn Olagundoye

(Calgary, AB)

Despite Calgary’s cling-tight reputation for being the epicentre of cowboy music, a burgeoning number of funk and soul purveyors hail from here, and Lynn Olagundoye is front and centre among them. A session veteran with local funksters Guerrilla Funk Monster during her college years, Olagundoye has gone on to write and produce her own music, rich in the vein of new soul. In an age where increasingly technological and synthetic music renders soul music that is precisely the opposite, Olagundoye marries a seductively smooth voice redolent of ‘70s R&B to a sound that incorporates the best of funk, jazz, Afrobeat, roots-reggae and vintage pop. She cites Erykah Badu and Jill Scott as influences; Badu and Scott would likely recognize a talented soul sister in Olagundoye.
