The blues take you right back to Africa,” Corey Harris can be heard saying in Feel Like Going Home, a documentary in which Martin Scorcese celebrates “the culture of storytelling through music. The blues… are the foundation for American popular music.” Harris’ explorations have taken him from Denver to New Orleans to Cameroon, from West Africa to the Caribbean, Australia, Brazil and Europe. You can hear elements of soul, reggae, funk and country, the influences of the many cultures, histories and events he’s studied and dissected. He’s been a street corner singer, a bandleader, songwriter, vocalist and film narrator. For his “deliberate eclecticism,” Harris was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship grant in 2007, the same year he was also awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
