Nimkii and the Niniis

Wiikwemkoong, ON

Heartbeat drums, First Nations traditional singing, spoken-word passages reflecting on the lived experiences of a residential school survivor, jingle dresses, hoop dancing, and the palpable pride of their ancestors: all of these elements have been part of Nimkii and the Niniis’ journey. Hailing from central Ontario, this Anishinaabeg drumming and choral singing group, led by Nimkii Osawamick, has travelled to Australia, Spain and beyond – picking up instant fans and a Juno nomination along the way. NATN are wholeheartedly dedicated to keeping alive their culture and language. Their powerful music is a beautifully crafted and thoughtful implement, healing relationships with the people, land and systems in desperate need of repair. Keeping their traditional language alive is a top priority; LFS5 (Live from Shed 5) mixed pow wow tunes and stories told by language keeper, Shirley Williams, and was the band’s second album to feature Anishinaabemowin spoken word throughout. Whether they are playing conferences, festivals, red carpets at prestigious film premieres or events celebrating Indigenous excellence, NATN’s message of hope and healing is a welcome salve for this weary world. Miigwech for your medicine, Nimkii and the Niniis!
