Ruby Singh lives as an artist without the boundaries of medium, genre, time, or place. Poet, photographer, video artist and, of course, musician, Singh seems to live with one foot planted firmly in the nature of Earth and another flying towards the cosmos. His work reflects both realms, as well as the mysterious spaces in-between.

Musically, Singh bounces between immersive soundscapes, vibey hip-hop, and guttural blues, leaning more heavily on specific genres depending on the project in front of him. With the Future Ancestors — a collaboration involving Memphis-born poet and hoodoo practitioner Arthur Flowers and gospel artist and historian Khari Wendell McClelland — the music immediately slots itself into the realm of gospel and blues. But when it comes to Singh, things are never exactly straightforward.

On their most recent album Celestial Libations, the Future Ancestors draw on mythical and griot traditions with a sound that is both modern and ancient in spirit. Traditional folk instrumentation, blues guitar, DJ-provided beats, and incantation-like vocals root the songs in a place of earthy reverence while still gazing towards the unknown. Singh and his cohorts are poised to take us all to church — the church may just be somewhere in outer space or deep in the core of the Earth depending on where they decide to go.
