It’s no surprise that Captain Medicine was named one of the top 10 notable releases for 2021 by the Calgary Herald. For relentless dreamer Bebe Buckskin, this accolade is another welcome marker confirming that she is on the right path. Her sound celebrates her love of vintage rhythm and blues, rock with soul, and her Northern Alberta Cree/Métis indigeneity. Buckskin grew up where horsemanship, jigging, fiddling, country music and songs of worship were Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement culture – especially when your father is a rodeo bullrider and your mother a gospel singer. Buckskin’s musical journey eventually led to the Muscle Shoals, Alabama, FAME studio to record Captain Medicine. Her band, along with special guests the Medicine Tail Singers, and the ghosts of former FAME recording legends Etta, Aretha, and Otis all helped Buckskin captain her ship to new port, using her internal compass that can’t help but point to the magnetic North.
