Heartless Bastards are anything but. The band is largely the endeavour of creative powerhouse Erikka Wennerstrom who serves as frontwoman, songwriter, producer and herder of creative cats - all roles she assumed on the acclaimed 2021 A Beautiful Life, which features an arm-length list of collaborators across the indie-rock/folk/pop spectrum. The songs are bursting with sounds and influences, anchored by Wennerstrom’s singular, uncompromising and captivating presence. From Velvet Underground strums to cacophonous guitar blitzes, delicate French pop-esque strings to classic British rock tropes, Heartless Bastards seamlessly weave together sounds culled from an expansive palette, seldom hesitating too long in moving from one to another, for music that’s restless and unyielding, but decidedly focused. “All I really want is the truth” Wennerstrom bellows toward the end of “Revolution” and amidst the sly hooks, cacophonic crescendos and musical digressions, her voice leaves little doubt of her conviction that the truth lies somewhere within these songs.
