When she first burst onto the indie scene in 2016, Margaret Glaspy could be counted on for delivering biting lyrics with bravado atop raw, thumping guitar. In the intervening years, her sound has grown, as she embraces bedroom electronics and synths. Retro-ish pop hooks are sprinkled amidst her observational, perhaps personal, songs. This increasingly broad sound drives her sophomore album, 2020’s Devotion and Glaspy’s music continues to serve her remarkable voice which can recall St. Vincent and Jenny Lewis in the same track while delivering lyrics that still cut to the quick. Now, though, those barbs are delivered slightly more subtly, and Glaspy has seemingly opened up enough to get a glimpse of vulnerability (check out her cover of Death Cab’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” as a prime example). Catching Glaspy now is to see an artist ascending, offering listeners breadcrumbs from song to song as to where she may go next.
