Matt Holubowski

from Montréal, QC

In his song "The King," Matt Holubowski side-eyes a "joke" of a man, holding fast to his paper crown while he aimlessly wanders from one crumbling town to the next but Holubowski can't be talking about himself, surely? Holubowski is no tepid, lightweight minstrel, he is a seasoned traveller; a purposeful collector who has amassed a wealth of experiences and arranged his photos into poetic slideshow-songs; the resulting, clear-eyed travelogues are, as one new fan gushed, "intoxicating, like a drug, but for the brain and not the vein." From his first album, Old Man (2014), to his most recent Weird Ones (2020), Holubowski has been feeding brains (in both official languages) with images of mango trees, night trains, walks past Leonard's house, and the unavoidable sprays of the grave keeper's garden hose, reminding us where we are all, finally, bound.
