Interdisciplinary artist, musician, producer, composer, educator and frequent collaborator Rup Sidhu specializes in vocal percussion and live looping that blends dynamic cross-cultural rhythms of poetry and spoken word. Inspired by global folk and classical music, his creations range from groove-oriented hip hop beats to contemporary fusions of classical ragas, scores for the National Film Board and remixes of vintage Bollywood tunes to experimental compositions for dance and theatre productions. Among the 14 albums he produced was Shane Koyczan’s debut release. RupLoops creates a pulsating, entertaining and interactive live looping performance, using vocal percussion, rhythmic rhymes and an arsenal of eclectic instruments. His new show The Human Radio takes audiences on an auditory journey that explores anatomy, geography and culture. Through body percussion and beatboxing, Rup demonstrates how the human form is indeed a musical instrument. With a mix of hip hop, blues and bhangra, The Human Radio tunes into themes of home, identity, culture, justice, dignity and celebration.
