Acrobats without nets, or a car without brakes, juggling fiery swords…perhaps no performance genre leaves so much up to the willing risk of the performer as spoken word. Starting with his roots in 2003 with the groundbreaking trio T.O.F.U (Tons of Fun University including fellow creative bandmates C.R. Avery and Mighty Mike McGee) Shane Koyczan’s words and stories have been spellbinding audiences for years. Although he mystifies people, he also heals with his work. With the rhythm of a street rapper, Koyczan walks us through the human experience, in all of its gritty, chaotic beauty, and gives us pause to reflect on the true and heightened effect of words, in a time where words mean more and more. His honesty regarding his own experiences and struggles open the door for audiences to examine their own minds and hearts, and ultimately, that might be the most important work an artist can do.
