Growing up with a nomadic single mother, Sunny War (born Sydney Lyndella Ward), moved from town to town in the US, spending some of her formative years in Detroit and Nashville before eventually settling in California. She taught herself to play guitar and began writing songs at 13, heavily influenced by the country blues of the deep south. When she moved west, War began exploring the Los Angeles punk scene while busking on the streets of Venice Beach. These different strains of her upbringing and musical influences are reflected in a percussive strumming style and raw approach that add an edge to the bluesy-folk music she plays. Her smooth, easy flowing vocal style and innate ear for melody belies the punk rock spirit that lays underneath.
