A quiet is the new loud approach to songwriting permeates the sound of This Is the Kit, a band name that essentially serves as an alias for British singer/songwriter Kate Stables. Most often labelled as alternative folk, Stables is a keen observer of the human experience and an exceptional musician who will bring in a rough electric guitar edge here, a bit of blues there, or a touch of bluegrass underneath to deliver her folk songs just the way she wants them. This Is the Kit’s most recent offering, Careful of Your Keepers, was released last year, a gorgeous follow up to 2020’s breakthrough Off Off On, featuring songs as intimate as a reflection on Stables’ favourite park in Paris to a meditation on climate change that never explicitly references it. Now based in Paris, Stables first formed This Is the Kit in 2003 in Winchester, UK and the band has performed in various configurations from a duo to a quartet with the core band including Rozi Plain (bass), Neil Smith (guitar) and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums). Through six albums and countless performances, they have gained a loyal cult following that is sure to keep growing.
