Hayes Carll’s brings an interesting take on the Texas outlaw tradition, with music that brings the swagger and swing of rock tovintage country traditions, from the perspective of a regular guy with street smarts and stories to tell. Setting his songs in dive bars and small towns, he livened up familiar subject matter with a sharp sense of humour, often making himself the butt of any joke he might crack, such as when he starts a bar brawl with the Almighty during “She Left Me for Jesus.” 16 years into his singer/songwriter career, Hayes has released his 6th studio album,What It Is. It's packed with his familiar dry wit but retains a meditative voice. Some songs make declarations of commitment, others reflect on the tempestuous political climate, and his signature humorous observations are laced with a sense of newfound peace.
