Over the past two decades, Nashville-based Canadian guitarist, singer and music producer Steve Dawson has become an indelible fixture on the musical landscape, with natural and authentic creations. His sound runs the gamut from gentle fingerstyle folk tunes, blazing, funky Americana grooves, acoustic blues and Hawaiian-style slide guitar instrumentals. The third installment of Dawson’s ‘pandemic trilogy’ Eyes Closed, Dreaming, was recorded under lockdown with talented pals Allison Russell, Fats Kaplin, Tim O’Brien and more contributing from different corners of North America. Despite him usually thriving on the chemistry of creating music live off the floor with musicians rubbing elbows together, they’ve created a warm album of brilliant roots music songcraft, filled with his characteristic beautiful melodies, inspired instrumentation and soulful vocals. It includes literate observations about love, attainment and the ephemeral nature of time as well as tasteful song interpretations that breathe new life into ancient ballads. Steve and his band’s nuanced, virtuosic music is akin to a master class in composition, melody and counterpoint.
