At turns a plaintive cry from the past and an uplifting celebration of a rich cultural heritage, Blisk offers a hypnotic musical journey through Eastern European cultures of Ukraine, Poland, Kazakhstan and the Balkans. Offering a gorgeous polyphonic vocal experience, the Toronto-based female trio blends the traditional folk music of the members’ various homelands with original compositions inspired as much by their Canadian home as their cultures of origin. Blisk’s live performances are as much a feast for the eyes as the ears. Donning colourful, flowing gowns, with hand-held instruments – accordion, flutes, drums, tambourines – they dance, tell stories and sing to the rafters. The audience experience is immersive as the band regularly shares stories of ancient rituals and folklore from which some of their songs originate, providing fascinating context for their more traditional material. Formed in 2017, they have a number of songs available to stream and download on Bandcamp as they work on their debut album.
