Folk Festival 2019
For Fast Romantics lead man Matthew Angus, the path to indie rock success has not been a straight one. Originally forming his band in Calgary a decade ago, the Fast Romantics have since moved to Toronto and had a few line-up changes — the road has had its twists, but given the rich sound that they’ve developed along the way, it’s a journey that’s taken the band to the right place.
In 2015, Angus essentially rebuilt Fast Romantics (aside from Angus, bass player Jeffrey Lewis is the only original member still standing) adding, in addition to other key members, Toronto singer-songwriter Kirty to play off of his own velvety, almost Neil Diamond-esque voice. The band’s robust layered multi-instrumental sound is best exemplified by “Julia,” the breakaway hit on their album The Julia, a jubilant explosion of sing-along pop melodies. But Fast Romantics are far from being one hit wonders. Newer songs like the 2018 single “Mexico” show a continued journey into romantic pop noir — any bubblegum elements that come from those earworm melodies are smudged with a yearning sense of darkness that keeps everything suitably grounded. Fast Romantics may not be returning to Calgary in the same form that they left, but with such a strong repertoire of pop anthems in their pocket, they’re always welcome home.
