Jim Bryson

In a noisy world, Jim Bryson gets his point across with a whisper. “A hushed pile of gently considered lyrical ruminations,” is how he describes the songs on his latest record Country Wifi which he softly delivers over a feather bed of delicate piano and lightly strummed guitar. On one, he recommends genuine experience vs. the social media-kind. “Let’s stick to the facts,” he sighs, on ‘Talking Trash.’ “Let’s think of the kids so they know we have their backs.” Bryson wasn’t always this quiet. The indie punk power pop band Punchbuggy marked his thundering arrival on Canada’s musical landscape in the ’90s. He transitioned to the singer songwriter life at the beginning of this century, a role he preferred because, he says, it’s the first time people listened. As well as flying solo, Bryson served as a side player with Kathleen Edwards and The Tragically Hip and more. Notably he was backed by the Weakerthans on his 2010 release The Falcon Lake Incident. Bryson also captains a studio in his backyard called Fixed Hinge where he makes his own records and produces others. It’s one of his happy places. Another is on stage. Bryson says he’ll play anywhere – your house, your backyard, your garage and of course in halls and festivals everywhere.
