Josyara is so much more than a songwriter or performer: she is an intrigued and intriguing explorer and liberator of Brazil’s ancestral, spiritual, natural and sexual allure. Her smooth but dramatic vocal delivery and her precise yet powerfully percussive guitar playing are the outward musical expressions of Josyara’s inner “gentle fury” (also the name of her latest album, Mansa Furia). Like ocean waves that constantly move, simultaneously accepting and rejecting sunlight, Josyara is both calm and angry: a thoughtful, unrelenting observer who can shape her songs into pointed, sharp reflections of the social, sexual and political climates around her. Josyara dares us to enlist with her and join forces against oppression and suppression, all while gettin’ down, down, down (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea down!). Calgary folkies may have first seen Josyara for the CFMF at Home online festival in 2020 – we are beyond excited to (finally!) present Josyara live.
